Each time a prominent awards ceremony nears, you'll find a demand for introducing fresh award types to recognize underappreciated efforts and satisfy the passions of fans who have specialized interests.
Another commentator has already made advocating for terror-themed awards. It would be amazing. The same goes for board games, which is a dedicated supporter's campaign. However, I must insist for pushing forward since similar to single-minded supporters, there's a strong justification for why my demand remains most pressing above others. The demand is this: We need an award type for logic-based games.
Categorizing Game Types
Organizing artistic expressions defies precise measurement; it’s very subjective, and inevitably spark debates resulting in unclear classifications. This explains why film award organizations don’t do it. But it is an essential concession in the world of video games, which are so diverse it's challenging to consider them a single creative category.
For the full spectrum of gaming accomplishments to receive acknowledgment, while allowing diverse titles to have a chance for representation, classification by type becomes crucial.
Current Gaming Award Categories
Leading game ceremonies offer these genre categories for Action, Action/Adventure, Role-Playing, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, and Sports/Racing games. Between them, these six categories effectively encompass a lot of ground, making space possible accommodating various experiences.
This doesn't apply to puzzle games. No suitable classification appears to put them. Consider three of this year’s best games, all very different: building puzzles from a specific release, fast-paced pattern recognition from another release, engaging interpersonal challenges in another game. What category would fit them within current classifications? Unfortunately, nowhere.
The Representation Problem
Numerous examples exist excellent brain-teasers released every year without proper recognition at major award shows, if they accidentally match classification types such as Mobile Game, Virtual reality experiences, or the extremely competitive Indie races.
- A renowned logic title received no recognition completely that year
- A different innovative game missed out in 2019
- Popular arranging title got ignored in 2021
- Just some logic titles scraped into niche award types
Significance of Puzzle Games
These are often modest productions, but the art in brain-teasers carries substantial weight. Well-known matching games stand as the most-played games globally and have been for over a decade.
The famous puzzle experience challenges well-known building titles competing to become most purchased experience; it’s also in the running for best game of all time. Logic titles represent cornerstones to the art of video games, while interacting across multiple categories.
Recommendation and Reasoning
Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter that issue. One could readily select a field of five with fascinating, diverse, deserving games each ceremony simply — or rather, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave many worthy titles.
To emphasize again, these represent titles lacking appropriate categories at major gaming awards. Puzzle game makers operate at the demanding boundary interactive creation, developing some of most fundamental forms of gaming itself. Comparable to film action specialists, they merit acknowledgment. We shouldn't delay generations.
