In a inauguration day in the mayor's office, Zohran Mamdani vowed to “transform” New York City, promising “a different age” and an audacious beginning to his tenure.

A Historic Leader

The 34-year-old figure, who just a year ago remained a virtually unknown state assemblyman, has become the city's first mayor of South Asian descent. He also made history by being the first to be take the oath of office using the Islamic holy text.

“A moment like this is rare and even more uncommon is it that the people themselves whose hold the mechanisms of progress,” Mamdani remarked.

Rejecting suggestions to lower expectations, the mayor was emphatic: “I will do no such thing. The only expectation I seek to redefine is that of small expectations. Beginning today we will govern boldly and broadly.”

Governing with Socialist Ideals

Mamdani openly embraced his core beliefs. “I was elected as a socialist leader and I will govern as one. I will not forsake my convictions for fear of being called extreme,” he proclaimed to an enthusiastic response.

The inauguration was a dual event, starting with a midnight oath-taking in a old subway station. He was formally sworn in on the steps of city hall by political ally Bernie Sanders, who spoke of Mamdani's rise as a victory over powerful interests.

A Costly Blueprint

Mamdani now begins one of the most demanding jobs in American politics, with a platform including:

• Free childcare
• Fare-free public buses
• A cap on rents for approximately 1 million households
• A trial program of city-run grocery stores

The estimated $10 billion expense of these initiatives may pose a hurdle to fund. Mamdani has pledged to raise taxes on the wealthiest New Yorkers and big business. However, as a city under the authority of the state government, he will require the cooperation of Governor Kathy Hochul.

Navigating External Headwinds

The new mayor will deal with apprehension from some Jewish New Yorkers concerned about his past criticisms regarding Israel. Sensitivities were revealed during the transition when a senior aide stepped down over offensive past tweets.

Mamdani has moved to ease these concerns by convincing Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to stay on, avoiding the optics of losing a Jewish police chief.

On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has called Mamdani a “socialist” and warned of withholding government money. Despite this, a recent encounter between the two was described as unexpectedly cordial.

The Fundamental Tests of Governing

In the end, New York mayors are judged on their ability in providing essential functions: trash collection, reducing the rat infestation, repairing potholes, and ensuring smooth transit operation.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams touted his team's anti-crime efforts, citing record low numbers of homicides and shootings in 2025, with murders reported.

As his work starts, Mamdani and his wife will move from their Queens apartment to the historic Gracie Mansion. The previous occupant offered a quirky warning about a reputed friendly ghost in the home, which allegedly only haunts those who fail to “do right by the city.”

Mamdani concluded his remarks with a simple statement: “The work has only just begun.”
